True acne scars, like any other scars left after wounds, are permanent. They can be of many types and shapes but the most common are hypertrophic or keloid scarring and atrophic scarring often referred to as ice pick. Scars need more intense treatment.

Keloid scars

Keloid scars or keloids are formed by excessive fibrous tissue that continues to grow for some time after the healing of wounded skin. • Vitamin E is very essential to skin health.  Apart from being able to increase the growth of new skin cells it helps restore natural elasticity as well as provides protection from free radicals. Applying it will help your scars to heal more rapidly.
  • Onion juice has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It is also proved to regulate collagen production which results into skin cells being rejuvenated.

Medical treatments

  • Scar removal ointments can be an effective and convenient solution for the problem.  Some of them have all-natural formulas including moisturizers and antioxidants while the others may contain steroids.
  • Chemical peels help promote regeneration of skin and reduction of scarring. They are usually used only to treat milder acne scars. You may need several treatments.
  • Microdermabrasion makes its work on the top layer of skin and for this reason is best for mild scars. You will need a series of treatments to observe a result.
  • Dermabrasion wounds the skin causing its bleeding. As the wound heals, new skin starts growing to replace the damaged skin. Recovery after the treatment takes time and depends on the depth of penetration into the skin layer.
  • Laser procedures are very effective. The types of laser differ and each of them has unique benefits for scarring removal. Once again this technic requires a multiple treatment.
  • Steroid injections are used for thick keloid scars. They are usually given once a month and get your scar look flatter but don’t change the colour of a scar.
